Weight reduction is crucial for optimal aircraft performance, safety and cost-effectiveness. IGS’ engineers aimed to develop a solution to save on the weight of their final product by brainstorming, prototyping and testing solutions.
Challenge: Develop a New, Lightweight Solution
The challenge was to develop a solution that would reduce the weight of the final product while maintaining its performance. IGS engineers used their experience and insights to create a bespoke internal locking design to fit the new internal diameter of the Gas Spring body.
The lightweight aluminium required more material to maintain the same pressure, creating less space for the mechanics, which required special engineering.
Solution: The Gold Standard of Gas Springs
The Aluminium Anodised Locking Gas Spring (Gold Gas Spring), passed 9G and 16G crash testing and received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval. The Gold Gas Spring weighed 40% less than comparable steel-body units while maintaining the performance levels of IGS Customline products. The anodised coating provides a protective, corrosion-resistance.
The Locking Gas Spring is commonly used for precision positioning aircraft interiors and seating applications such as seating recline, leg rest or full lay-flat seats in high-end aircraft.
The benefits of the Gold Gas Spring include:
- Meets aerospace requirements through AS9100D certification.
- Significantly improved fuel efficiency, leading to reduced operating costs.
- Increased payload capacity, allowing airlines to meet the needs of their customers.
- A lighter aircraft that can take off and land more quickly and manoeuvre more efficiently.
- End-customer satisfaction with the quality of seat control and comfort.
